Celebrating 95 years in 2009
Tyrholm & Farstad can soon look back on 95 years in the service of the business community in the north-west of Norway. It all started in 1914 when Otto Tyrholm started a sea freight forwarding company in Aalesund.
With its global network of partners, Tyrholm & Farstad makes sure that the goods produced by customers in Norway’s north-western region are delivered to destinations worldwide as speedily and efficiently as possible. It all started in 1914 under the name Otto Tyrholms Dampskips-ekspedisjon (Otto Tyrholm’s Steamship -Forwarders).Just a few years later, in 1919, Otto’s -half-brother Sverre A. Farstad, joined the company as co-owner, and it soon changed its name to Tyrholm & Farstad AS. When Otto Tyrholm died, Sverre Farstad took over the business, developing it into one of the leading freight -forwarding companies in the Sunnmore region of Norway. The firm was quick to establish ties with a number of commercial agencies that were of great importance to the local business community. In 1956 the shipping line Sverre A. Farstad & Co was founded. As time went by, this company contributed to the growth in -Aalesund’s merchant fleet and, naturally enough, had close ties to Tyrholm & Farstad AS.
In 1958, when Aalesund’s Vigra Airport was opened, Tyrholm & Farstad became the general agent for the airline Braathens SAFE. This led to a substantial volume of work for Braathens, -lasting right up until 30 April 1974. After this time, Tyrholm & Farstad retained a ticketing and airfreight department at Skateflua in the centre of Aalesund. In 1989 Braathens took over -ticketing operations itself, while the airfreight department was moved to Vigra Airport when it was linked to the mainland by a series of undersea road tunnels in 1987. The company’s fleet of ships was transferred to Farstad -Shipping ASA in 1993.
The courier service Til & Fra was founded in 1998. It currently operates under the name Box Delivery Aalesund. A year later the container -terminal and freezer storage facility at Skutvika was opened. It is here that most of the physical handling of large consignments is undertaken. Freezer storage, bonded warehouse and freight forwarding facilities are also located at -Skutvika.
The loading of dried codfish has a long and rich tradition in Aalesund. During the best -periods, some 45000 tons dried codfish were shipped through the quays in the city. At the Skansekaia quay, as everywhere else in the harbour, Tyrholm & Farstad and the -harbour authorities' employees have co-oa
